Session 3: Shifting Perspective to Provide More Equitable Support

Session Overview:

This session builds on the knowledge and understanding of implicit bias and microaggressions.  Specifically, equity conversations are advanced to assess the impact of power and privilege within organized systems such as those in which we live and work. Critical to equity is the exploration of how a predominately racialized and able-bodied environment exercises power and privilege. Participants will use self-reflection to analyze how values, experiences, assumptions, and environment influence practices of service professionals working with people with IDD.

Session Goals:

  • Understand the meaning of power, privilege, and perspective
  • Consider how we use our power and privilege on a daily basis
  • Reflect on our approaches to supporting individuals with disabilities
