Session 4: Examining Disparities through Intersectionality

Session Overview:

Using intersectionality as the framework, this session identifies and unpacks the root causes of disproportionality within the IDD community and in disability services. Data is presented to highlight existing inequities and their impacts in the community. Participants are  challenged to apply a culturally responsive and inclusive lens to identify systems, policies, and/or practice that contribute to identified disparities, and to devise a plan to actively work towards eradicating inequities.

Session Goals:

  • Define intersectionality and understand how multiple identities overlap and magnify one another
  • Examine current data trends and reflect on implications within the IDD community
  • Explore disparities within the IDD and support communities, and use this lens to examine current practices
